The Importance and Meaning of Diamonds
Diamonds have always carried a particular sort of symbolism throughout history. Today, it can be mostly noted for its significance in romance - using a diamond ring being the main ring a male ever buys, and provide to the woman that they loves.
But a long time before that, Diamond Jewellery were built with a very different kind of symbolism and meaning. For millennia, the traits of diamonds which make them so valuable and so treasured have been interpreted by different cultures diversely, and their strength, hardness, brilliance and beauty have signified various meanings.
Way back when, the Greeks held the belief that diamonds were the tears in the gods because of its physical properties that appeared to be out of this world. The Romans believed roughly exactly the same, only as opposed to being the tears with the gods they believed that diamonds were fragments of fallen stars.
Halfway all over the world from there, in ancient India diamonds were considered to have magical properties and were of specific spiritual and mythological significance. Diamonds in India were never cut, given it was asserted if they were their powers would dissipate.
In Tibetan Buddhism, diamonds also play a huge role and in fact Tibetan Buddhism itself is actually called Vajrayana which loosely means the Diamond Vehicle, and something of their most crucial texts is called the Diamond Sutra.
Since those middle ages times, various other myths and legends have sprung forth around diamonds too. At the center Ages, it turned out thought that diamonds could tell whether someone was innocent or guilty, understanding that a diamond would darken inside the presence of guilt, and shine bright in the presence of innocence.
This remarkable stone has also always been said to bring luck and fortune to anybody who wears it, and perhaps warriors and Kings would wear it into battle, believing that it would bring them victory over their enemies.
As you have seen, the symbolism and meaning behind diamonds has varied throughout history.
Its trendy significance of romance and marriage only began in 1477 when the Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy because of their engagement. Although prior to that there are actually cases of betrothal gifts which entail diamond jewelry for example tiaras, brooches, and necklaces - that is the first case of the diamond ring being given upon an engagement.
Naturally - the remaining is history.
Today, value of diamonds in romance and engagement will be the predominant symbolism all over the world. It has a special meaning, and possesses potent emotional significance, but it doesn't mean that it could not one day symbolize something quite different once more.
Who knows the future holds for the symbolism and concept of diamonds.
